HomeMy WebLinkAbout1/11/2024 - Adopted Board Records AT A REGULAR MEETING OF THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF ROANOKE COUNTY, VIRGINIA, HELD AT THE ROANOKE COUNTY ADMINISTRATION CENTER, ON TUESDAY, JANUARY 11, 2024 RESOLUTION 011124-1 OF APPOINTMENT TO FILL THE VACANCY ON THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS IN THE VINTON MAGISTERIAL DISTRICT WHEREAS, P. Jason Peters, member of the Roanoke County Board of Supervisors representing the Vinton Magisterial District, was on November 7, 2023, elected to serve as the County's Commissioner of Revenue; and WHEREAS, the Constitution of Virgina, Article VII, Section 6, prohibits a person from serving as both a member of a local governing body and a local constitutional officer at the same time; and WHEREAS, Mr. Peters's assumption of office as Commissioner of Revenue on January 1, 2024, created a vacancy on the Board of Supervisors; and WHEREAS, the remaining members of the Board of Supervisors desire to appoint a qualified voter of the Vinton Magisterial District to fill this vacancy, said appointment to become effective immediately; and WHEREAS, the person appointed shall qualify by swearing an oath of office within thirty days after this appointment; and WHEREAS, the person appointed shall hold this office until the qualified voters of this election district shall fill this office by a special election to be held on November 5, 2024. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of Supervisors of Roanoke County, Virginia, as follows: 1. That the Board hereby appoints Tammy E. Shepherd to fill the vacancy on the Page 1 of 2 Board of Supervisors of Roanoke County for the Vinton Magisterial District. 2. That this resolution shall take effect immediately upon its adoption. 3. The Board directs the County Attorney to file a Petition for Writ of Election with the Clerk of the Circuit Court, requesting the Court to issue a Writ of Election for a special election to be held on November 5, 2024, to elect a member of the of the Roanoke County Board of Supervisors from the Vinton Magisterial District to serve through December 31, 2025. On motion of Supervisor Radford to adopt the resolution; seconded by Supervisor Radford and carried by the following roll call and recorded vote: AYES: Supervisors Radford, Mahoney, North NAYS: None ABSTAIN: Supervisor Hooker A COPY TESTE: 'chard L.
