School Board chairman Jerry Canada presented an update

southwest schools. He reported that a steering committee had
been formed consisting of administrators, teachers and members of
the business community.
He informed those present that on

construct a new high school in southwest County and to convert
the present high school to a middle school.
The motion passed
unanimously.
School Superintendent Dr. Deanna Gordon advised that
the School Board cannot proceed with further plans until the
Board of Supervisors makes a decision on whether to build a new

capital projects such as fire stations and school projects.
In response to the Board of Supervisors questions, Mr.
, ,
Hodge advised that a new high school could be èonstructed' by
using a combination of resources including a bond issue of $25
million in GOA bonds, $5 million in literary loans, funds already
allocated for other school proj ects and a two cent increase in
the real estate tax rate.
County Attorney Paul Mahoney reported that 60 days is
needed to hold a special election for a bond referendum.
Finance Director Diane Hyatt advised that the County would need
$2 million in cash to payoff the bonds until 2001 when the debt
drops.
Concerns were expressed by members of the Board of
Supervisors and School Board that the bond referendum may not
pass, and if it does not, the schools requested assurance that
the renovations at Cave Spring Junior High School will be
completed.
More specific information was also requested by
Supervisor Eddy.
County Administrator Elmer Hodge was asked to bring to
the December 12 meeting three options for construction of a new
