The Board of Supervisors of Roanoke County, Virginia, met this day
at a special area meeting at the Bonsack Ruritan Club, Bonsack, Virginia, this
being the first Tuesday of the Month of October, 1983.
IN RE:
CALL TO ORDER
At 7:32 p.m. Mr. Richard Hogue, of the Bonsack Ruritan Club,
welcomed the Roanoke County Board of Supervisors and turned the meeting over
to Chairman Johnson, who called the meeting to order. The roll call was taken:
MEMBERS PRESENT:
Chairman, May W. Johnson; Vice Chairman, Harry C.
Nickens, Supervisors Athena E. Burton, Robert E. Myers
MEMBERS ABSENT:
Supervisor Robert E. Myers

OPENING CEREMONIES
Superintendent of the Department of Fiscal Management, John
Chambliss, offered the invocation. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all
presen t .
IN RE:
INTRODUCTION OF CONSTITUTIONAL OFFICERS AND COUNTY
STAFF
Chairman Johnson introduced the following people: Superintendent
of the Department of Fiscal Management, John Chambliss; Superintendent of the
Department of Public Facilities, John Hubbard; Superintendent of the Department
of Development, Timothy Gubala; Personnel Director, Keith Cook; Sheriff O. S.
Foster; Library Director, George Garretson; Fire and Emergency Services
Coordinator, Tommy Fuqua; County Attorney, James Buchholtz; County
Administrator, Donald Flanders; Commissioner of Revenue, Wayne Compton; Clerk
of Circuit Court, Elizabeth Stokes; Superintendent of Schools, Bayes Wilson; Vinton

Magisterial District Representative to the School Board, Barbara Chewning; and
the principals of Hardy Road, East Vinton, William Byrd Junior High, and William
Byrd High Schools.
IN RE:
BACKGROUND OF PROJECTS COMPLETED AND PROGRAMS
UNDERWAY
County Administrator, Donald R. Flanders, requested the staff outline
and explain their respective projects. Those staff members who spoke were John
Hubbard, Timothy Gubala, Bayes Wilson, Tommy Fuqua, and Sheriff o. S. Foster.
Citizens comments were reviewed and discussed.
IN RE:
ADJOURNMENT
At 9:36 p.m. Supervisor Nickens moved to adjourn the meeting, and
the motion carried by a unanimous voice vote.
