HomeMy WebLinkAbout3/17/2009 - Adopted Board Records AT A REGULAR MEETING OF -rHE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF ROANOKE COUNTY, VIRGINIA, HELD AT -rHE ROANOKE COUNTY ADMINISTRATION CENTER ON TUESDAY, MARCH 17,2009 RESOLUTION 031709-1 OF CONGRATULATIONS TO WilliAM BYRD HIGH SCHOOL CHEER TEAM FOR WINNING THE STATE GROUP AA CHAMPIONSHIP IN CHEERlEADING WHEREAS, team sports are an important part of the curriculum at schools in Roanoke County teaching cooperation, sportsmanship and athletic skill; and WHEREAS, the Virginia High School League competition affords the participating student-athletes an opportunity to showcase their athleticism and skill, shifting the spotlight from the athletes on the field or court to the cheerleaders themselves; and WHEREAS, the William Byrd High School Cheer Team is cOrTlprised of members from the Junior Varsity and Varsity squads who have been selected to become members of the competition team; and WHEREAS, the Cheer Team won the Blue Ridge District, Region III, and the Group AA State championship for 2008, and during the past seven years, the team has won five state championships; and WHEREAS, the Cheer Team is actively involved in community service and organized the Battle at Byrd, which raised approximately $3,000 to donate to Susan G. Komen for the Cure; and WHEREAS, the Cheer Team is coached by Monica West, and Assistant Coaches Marcia Patterson and Mike Bass. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Roanoke County, Virginia, does hereby extend its sincere congratulations to the members of the WilliAM BYRD HIGH SCHOOL COMPETITION CHEER TEAM: Hannah Angel, Lindsey Bass, Karla Bennington, Lindsey Booth, Jared Brammer, Amber Cannaday, Morgan Canterbury, Danielle Carr, Ragen Drew, Brittney Ellis, Courtney Ellis, Caitlin Gerig, Taylor Lafferty, Ashley Lester, Kimberly Lyon, Ashley Simmons, Kayla Smith, Hallie Spradlin, Jordan Veasey, Chelsea Williams, Brittany Sands, for their athletic ability, their team spirit, and their commitment to each other; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors extends its best wishes to the members of the team, the coaches, and the school in their future endeavors. Hol on, CMC Deputy Clerk to the Board 2 AT A REGULAR MEE-rING OF -rHE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF ROANOKE COUNTY, VIRGINIA, HELD AT -rHE ROANOKE COUNTY ADMINISTRATION CENTER ON TUESDAY, MARCH 17, 2009 RESOLU1-ION 031709-2 OF CONGRATULATIONS TO WILLIAM BYRD PLAYERS FOR AWARDS RECEIVED AT THE DISNEY NATIONAL PERFORMING ARTS FESTIVAL WHEREAS, the William Byrd Players' "Smokey Joe's Cafe" Competition Team, under the direction of Carol Lyn Webster, won the Players' second consecutive National Performing Arts Festival; and WHEREAS, the William Byrd Players won the highest number of medals and trophies for any group at the festival which was held at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida; and WHEREAS, the William Byrd Players received 13 medals ranging from vocal performance to choreography and including the most outstanding performance, and two trophies, one in excellence and one in outstanding male performance; and WHEREAS, the William Byrd Players was one of two youth groups chosen to showcase at the Festival and they presented "Rollin'/Searching" on the outdoor Waterside stage at downtown Disney; and WHEREAS, as two-year National Performing Arts Festival Winners, the William Byrd Players have earned a reputation of excellence in the arts in the area of acting, vocal, and dance. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Roanoke County, Virginia, does hereby extend its sincere congratulations to the members of the cast and crew of the "Smokey Joe's Cafe Competition Team" of the WILLIAM BYRD PLAYERS: Mackenzie Brewer, Stephanie Broyles, Dorian Dozier, Ryan Gilley, Lauren Hypes, Aaron Kasey, Diana Lackey, Sarabeth Landrum, Mark MacCadden, Maegan Puckett, Ryan Ramos, Shaun Reid, Whitney Short, Noah Sterling, Jenny Swortzel, Meghan Upchurch, Christie Vernon, Megan Walker, Michael Webster, William Webster, Layne White, and Tyler Wiggins for awards received at the Disney National Performing Arts Festival; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors extends its best wishes to the members of the William Byrd Players for continued success in the future. H Iton, CMC Deputy Clerk to the Board 2 AT A REGULAR MEE-rING OF -rHE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF ROANOKE COUNTY, VIRGINIA, HELD AT -rHE ROANOKE COUNTY ADMINISTRATION CENTER ON TUESDAY, MARCH 17, 2009 RESOLU1-ION 031709-3 EXPRESSING THE APPRECIATION OF THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS AND THE STAFF OF ROANOKE COllNTY TO JOHN M. CHAMBLISS, ,-IR., COUNTY ADMINISTRATOR WHEREAS, John M. Chambliss, Jr. assumed the position of County Administrator on July 1, 2008 following the retirement of long-time County AdrTlinistrator Elmer C. Hodge; and WHEREAS, Mr. Chambliss' willingness to step into this position gave members of the Board of Supervisors the time they needed to conduct a nationwide search for Mr. Hodge's permanent successor; and WHEREAS, Mr. Chambliss' foresight helped County staff recognize and prepare for the worsening economic conditions facing the nation, Commonwealth, and Roanoke County as it became apparent that increased costs and a loss in revenues would total nearly $7 million in the current budget year and approximately $8 million in the next fiscal year; and WHEREAS, Mr. Chambliss worked cooperatively and openly with County staff, the Board of Supervisors and School Board to find solutions to the County's current and future budget challenges without significant harm to services or existing employees; and WHEREAS, Mr. Chambliss set an example of hopefulness and determination during difficult times through his calm demeanor and cheerful spirit while encouraging the County staff to maintain a positive attitude and to work as a team; and WHEREAS, Mr. Chambliss continued his hard work and steadfast commitment to the Western Virginia Regional Jail project ensuring that it would open on schedule in March 2009, including working with local legislators to guarantee receipt of $11.3 million in state funding pledged for capital construction of the Regional Jail; and WHEREAS, Mr. Chambliss has earned the support of the Board of Supervisors, County staff, and citizens by demonstrating an unwavering commitment to Roanoke County and its people. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Roanoke County, Virginia, does hereby express deep appreciation to JOHN M. CHAMBLISS, JR. for the past eight months of service as County Adrninistrator and offers sincere congratulations and best wishes in all future endeavors.
