HomeMy WebLinkAbout2/12/1998 - Regularr T AT AN ADJOURNED MEETING OF THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF ROANOKE COUNTY, VIRGINIA, HELD AT THE ROANOKE COUNTY SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION CENTER ON THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 1998 RESOLUTION 021 98- SUPPORTING THE APPLICATION OF SIMMONS AIRLINES, AN AMERICAN EAGLE CARRIER REQUESTING SLOTS AT CHICAGO O'HARE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT TO SERVE THE ROANOKE REGIONAL AIRPORT WHEREAS, the United States Congress has directed the Department of Transportation to make additional takeoff and landing "slots" avai{able at Chicago O'Hare International Airport for expanded air service to undeserved communities; and WHEREAS, On October 9, 1997, American Eagle applied for 60 slots to serve 10 communities, including Roanoke with new 50 seat Embraer-145 Regional Jets; and WHEREAS, American Eagle is the world's largest air carrier in the world based on daily departures with over 1,200 daily flights carrying a million passengers monthly; and WHEREAS, the Roanoke Regional Airport provides the airline transportation needs for many businesses and individuals in southwest Virginia; and WHEREAS, air transportation is critical to the growth and development of a community, especially in attracting new businesses and; WHEREAS, the addition of three round-trip flights between Chicago and Roanoke would improve the quality of transportation for the community, enhance the economic development efforts of our region, and provide connecting flights to other locations throughout the United States. NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of Roanoke County, Virginia supports the application of Simmons Airlines, an American Eagle carrier, 1 to provide additional flights to Chicago O'Hare International Airport; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Board of Supervisors directs the Clerk to the Board to forward a certified copy of this resolution to the Honorable Rodney E. Slater, Secretary of the United States Department of Transportation. Shuck, Executive Director, Roanoke Regional Airport 2 AT AN ADJOURNED MEETING OF THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF ROANOKE COUNTY, VIRGINIA, HELD AT THE ROANOKE COUNTY SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION CENTER ON THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 1998 RESOLUTION 0 7298- CERTIFYING EXECUTIVE MEETING WAS HELD IN CONFORMITY WITH THE CODE OF VIRGINIA WHEREAS, the Board of Supervisors of Roanoke County, Virginia has convened an executive meeting on this date pursuant to an affirmative recorded vote and in accordance with the provisions of The Virginia Freedom of Information Act; and WHEREAS, Section 2.1-344.1 of the Code of Virginia requires a certification by the Board of Supervisors of Roanoke County, Virginia, that such executive meeting was conducted in conformity with Virginia law. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Supervisors of Roanoke County, Virginia, hereby certifies that, to the best of each members knowledge: 1. Only public business matters IawFully exempted from open meeting requirements by Virginia law were discussed in the executive meeting which this certification resolution applies, and 2. Only such public business matters as were identified in the motion convening the executive meeting were heard, discussed or considered by the Board of Supervisors of Roanoke County, Virginia. ITEM NUMBER AT A REGULAR MEETING OF THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF ROANOKE COUNTY, VIRGINIA HELD AT THE ROANOKE COUNTY ADMINISTRATION CENTER MEETING DATE: February 12, 1998 AGENDA ITEM: Resolution Supporting the application of Simmons Airlines, an American Eagle carrier requesting slots at Chicago O'Hare International Airport to serve the Roanoke Regional Airport COUNTY ADMINISTRATOR'S COMMENTS• SUMMARY OF INFORMATION: American Eagle has met with local businesses, agencies and governments to announce that Simmons Airlines, an American Eagle carrier has filed an application with the U. S. Department of Transportation requesting slots at Chicago O'Hare International Airport to serve non-hub communities, including the Roanoke Regional Airport. American Eagle wants to serve the Roanoke Valley with three daily non-stop, round-trip flights to Chicago O'Hare. American Eagle has formerly served the Roanoke area before they closed their hubs. The Roanoke Regional Airport serves as the major airport in this part of the Commonwealth of Virginia and additional flights to Chicago are needed by the business community, especially R. R. Donnelley, which is based out of Chicago. These flights would also provide connecting flights to other locations beyond Chicago. Attached is information I received at the luncheon today. STAFF RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the Board of Supervisors adopted the attached resolution of support and forward it to the Secretary of the Department of Transportation.
