REQUESTS TO ADD TO OR CHANGE THE ORDER OF AGENDA ITEMS: BLJ ADDED DISCUSSION ON PARTICIPATING IN THE NEW CENTURY GROUP VIRGINIA HEADWATERS REGIONAL INDUSTRIAL FACILITY AUTHORITY F. DISCUSSION ITEMS 1. Update on Explore Park by Executive Director Roger Ellmore UPDATE BY ROGER ELLMORE - 46% INCREASE IN ATTENDANCE AND 86% INCREASE IN REVENUES. REPORTED ON OPENING OF NEW ATTRACTIONS AND PLANS FOR FUTURE PROJECTS. 2. Update on Regional Detention Facility PRESENTED BY CHIP SNEAD AND JOHN CHAMBLISS: COMMISSION CREATED IN MAY AND IN PROCESS OF TRANSITIONING FROM CITY FACILITY TO REGIONAL FACILITY. WILL GET STATE FUNDING UP TO $52,000 PER BED. FACILITY WILL COST $8.2 MILLION. BOTH LOCALITIES HAVE MADE APPOINTMENTS TO THE COMMISSION. 3. Status Report on the proposed regional Teen Center PRESENTED BY PETE HAISLIP AND JOHN COATS. ACTIVE COMMITTEE INCLUDING PARKS AND REC STAFF FROM BOTH LOCALITIES, CITY OFFICE OF YOUTH AND DOWNTOWN ROANOKE~ INC. SCHEDULED A TEEN FORUM ON JULY 23 AT VWCC AND INVITED 56 ORG. WORKING WITH TEENS TO LOOK AT ON WHAT FACILITIES AND ACTIVITIES TEENS WANT. MAYOR BOWERS SUGGESTED ROANOKE COUNTY JOIN CITY IN AMERICA'S PROMISE PROGRAM DESIGNED FOR AT-RISK CHILDREN. 4. Request to participate in Virginia Headwaters Regional 2 Industrial Facility Authority MAYOR BOWERS ADVISED THAT ROANOKE CITY WILL PARTICIPATE IN THE AUTHORITY JIM TROUT REPORTED ON THE Awl THORITY AND ADVISED AUTHORITY NEEDS TO BE IN PLACE BY SEPTEMBER. BLJ ADVISED REQUEST WILL BE ADDED TO COUNTY'S REGULAR MEETING AGENDA LATER IN THE DAY. G. COMMENTS Members of Roanoke City Council CARROLL SWAIN READ ARTICLE ABOUT LOWES PUTTING UP MONUMENT IN PINKARD COURT RECOGNIZING THE COMMUNITY. ASKED TO BE KEPT INFORMED ABOUT THE DESIGN. ALVIN HUDSON COMMENDED THOSE INVOLVED IN THE REGIONAL DETENTION FACILITY. 2. Members of the Roanoke County Board of Supervisors BLJ SUGGESTED LOOKING AGAIN AT THE CONCEPT OF A JOINT ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT THAT WOULD INCLUDE TOURISM. Nelson Harris will be officiating. Below are the details of both events: July 8, 1998 7:00 PM Visit of the Civic League Presidents of Roanoke County Amve a 7:00 pm and meet at the lower parking lot at the store. Approximately 20 people to attend The touring time approximately an hour in duration (Perhaps divided into two groups) FOCUS: What Virginia's Explore Park is, what it has, and what it offers. July 14, 1998 12:00 noon Hosting of the Joint Board of Supervisors and City Council Meeting Meet at the Taubman Center at noon. Anticipate 30 to 35 participants (Minimum of 25) Brugh to cater the lunch at the Taubman Center (menu to be arranged). Room large enough to set up a "U" shaped series of table We will hope to finalize these plans over the next few days.
