A-22592-9 ITEM NUMBER AT A REGULAR MEETING OF THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF ROANOKE COUNTY, VIRGINIA HELD AT THE ROANOKE COUNTY ADMINISTRATION CENTER MEETING DATE: February 18, 1992 AGENDA ITEM: Request from School Board to Purchase Special Education Bus COUNTY ADMINISTRATOR'S COMMENTS: BACKGROUND: On November 19, 1991, staff presented the year end balances to the Board. The County Schools reported a year end surplus of $592,429. Of this amount, $12,500 was appropriated for a stoplight at Northside High School and Peters Creek Road. The remaining $579,929 was set aside to cover the anticipated shortfall for the 1991-1992 fiscal year. SUMMARY OF INFORMATION: Before the Schools decided to save their surplus from 1990-1991 for the current year shortfall, they had already requested bids for the purchase of school buses. The School Transportation department has an urgent need for one new Special Education bus with a chairlift. The cost of this one bus is $46,000. The Schools currently have $31,500 in the School Bus Fund. At this time, they would like to appropriate $14,500 of the 1990-1991 year end surplus for the purchase of this Special Education bus. FISCAL IMPACT: After this appropriation, the Schools will still have $565,429 to cover the projected 1991-1992 deficit. At this time, the anticipated shortfall is $500,000. STAFF RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends appropriating $14,500 from the 1990-1991 year end school surplus for the purchase of a Special Education bus with a chairlift.
