Park, Jr. PRESENT: Chair~an Edward C. Park, Jr., Vice Chairman Athena E. Burton, SU'Jervisors Hay W. Johnson, Gary J. Hinter and Robert E. Myers. ABSENT: None IN RE: CALL TO ORDER Chairman Edward C. Park, Jr. called the meeting to order at i' 3:00 p.m. Mr. Park read the call for the meeting and the waiver of notice, I as follows: Mr. Donald R. Myers ..... ~ 7-16-82 t ii' Q I \iJ) IN RE: RESIGNATION OF CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD Mr. Park thereupon announced his resignation from the Roanoke County Board of Supervisors as a representative from the Vinton Magisterial I District. The resignation to become effective immediately. Mr. Park stated he had received an offer of employment that he could not refuse which would require relocation from the area. Mr. Park expressed pride at the many achievements accomplished by the County during his terms of office as a County Board Supervisor for four and one-half years and while serving as County Board Chairman since January 2, 1982. He outlined achievements in the area of coordination of effort with other units of government including: water and sewerage agreements, solid waste regional organization, economic development efforts. He also expressed pride in the improvements made to the County's fire and emergency service facilities and equipment and the effort to I coordinate County administrative services now coming to fruition. He expressed his appreciation to fellow Board members for their support, encouragement, and cooperation and thanked the department heads, constitutional officers, and staff for providing their collective assistance to making Roanoke County a better place in which to live work and play. Motion was made by Supervisor Minter to accept Mr. Park's resignation from the County Board immediately with deepest regret. The motion was carried by voice vote. Mrs. May Johnson stated she was pleased and proud to have had the opportunity to work with Mr. Park for the last four and one-half years I in a mutual effort to improve the County. Mr. Myers and Mr. Minter, too, expressed their appreciation for excellent leadership as Chairman for the last six months. I i ! I i ,- j I ! , having had the opportunity to work with Mr. Park and thanked him for his I~ J"'" 7-16-82 ~ L~i- 'I IN RE: PRESENTATION Mrs. Athena Burton thereupon presented to Mr. Park, on behalf of the other members of the Board and the citizens of the County, a placque in recognition of Mr. Park's leadership as Chairman and Supervisor. Mrs. I Burton stated Mr. Park exemplified the calm leadership as Chairman that is needed to make government be attentive to the needs of the public. Mrs. Burton thereupon assumed the responsibility of chairing the meeting and directed the Clerk to immediately advise the Circuit Judge of the vacancy created in the Vinton Magisterial District by Mr. Park's resignation to allow for the proper calling of an election to fill the vacancy. Mrs. Burton stated that she felt it appropriate that the County Board convene at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 27th, at the Salem-Roanoke County Civic Center prior to the regular County Board session to consider filling the vacancy, pursuant to Code, pending the election and any reorganizational I activities necessary. Thereupon, Mrs. Johnson moved that the County Board convene at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 27th, at the Salem-Roanoke County Civic Center to consider the vacancy created in the Vinton Magisterial District as a result of Mr. Edward C. Park, Jr. resigning and to consider any reorganization matters necessary. The motion was carried by unanimous voice vote.
