HomeMy WebLinkAbout10/16/2002 - MinutesROANOKE COUNTY BOARD OF ZONING APPEALS — MEETING MINUTES PUBLIC HEARING — OCTOBER 16, 2002 PRESENT: Mr. Eric Thomas Mr, Rodney McNeil Mr. Carlton Wright Mr, Richard Jones, Chairman Mr, Eldon Karr Mr. Joseph Obenshain, Senior Assistant County Attorney Mr. Timothy Beard, Secretary Ms.. Susan Carter, Recording Secretary Mr, Jones called the meeting to order at 7:00pm, APPROVAL OF AGENDA Mr. Karr' moved to approve the agenda, The motion was seconded by Mr. Wright, which carried unanimously. PUBLIC HEARING PETITION A variance requested by Cox & Associates, Architects P.C. of Section 30- 36-- 3(B)l.a of the Roanoke County Zoning Ordinance to reduce the front yard setback from 35 feet to 29 feet. The purpose of this request is to expand the existing Verizon building located at 3580 Alltree Trail, Catawba Magisterial District, Mr.. Basil Cox, Cox & Associates, Architects P,C., presented the petition for Verizon. He stated the existing building is currently 6 feet over the setback. He stated they need to add to the existing building in such a way that the line up of equipment is matched with current equipment, He stated this building is used as an unmanned remote switching station that ties back into the central offices on Franklin Road. He gave a brief interior design description of equipment noting the equipment is sensitive. Mr. Kenneth Turner of 3497 Alltrec Trail expressed concerns regarding this expansion encroaching too far over the road preventing future plans to have the road upgraded fiom a private road to a state maintained road. Both Mr, Joseph Obenshain and Mr. Cox reviewed the site plan with Mr. Turner, Mr. Turner also expressed concern regarding increased employee traffic. Mr Cox stated he did not anticipate an incrcase in traffic, Mr. Thomas moved to grant the requested variance noting in the present state due to the extraordinary setting and use of equipment which requires specific installation locations in order to keep the building in line with existing equipment. He also noted since the building is currently non - conforming this will allow it do be done in a correct manner, Mr. Wright seconded the motion with the following vote: AYES: McNeil, Thomas, Wright, Jones, Karr NAYS: ABSENT: APPROVAL OF MINUTES Mr. McNeil moved to approve minutes of August 21, 2002 with changes. The motion was seconded by Mr. Wright, which carried unanimously. COMMENTS There were no comments There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:10 p,m.
