WORK SESSION:
Ms. Penn called the meeting to order at 12:19 p.m.
Briefings:
Mr. Shane Sawyer, Roanoke Valley Alleghany Regional Commission (RVARC),
reviewed the following topics:
1. Regional Water Supply Study
Mr. Shane Sawyer discussed the Regional Water Supply Study including
participating localities, watersheds, and funding. He stated this study was
completed as part of 50 year water supply plan as mandated by the state
regulations.

2. 419 Corridor Study
Mr. Sawyer briefly reviewed the 419 Corridor Study. He stated it includes
proposed multi-modal improvements. He stated Roanoke Valley Area
Metropolitan Planning Organization is partnering with the Virginia Department of
Transportation to complete a multimodal transportation plan of Route 419. He
stated the plan will evaluate various aspects of the corridor over a 25 year
planning horizon, including traffic capacity, bicycle and pedestrian
accommodations, transit service, freight, and park and ride lots. The planning
effort is jointly funded by the Roanoke Area MPO, Salem District-VDOT, and a
grant from the Virginia Intermodal Planning Office.
3. Urban Tree Canopy Analysis
Mr. Sawyer discussed funding and cooperation from the Virginia Department of
Forestry, Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, Virginia Tech and
local governments. He discussed a series of reports which were produced on
the status of the urban tree canopy in the Roanoke Region. He discussed how
the urban tree canopy helps improve water quality, energy conservation, lowers
area temperatures, enhances property values, and reduces air pollution.
4. Regional Housing Study
Mr. Sawyer described various alternatives for housing in the area. He reviewed
demographic and spatial overviews. He stated greenways are viewed as an
enhancement to the various area neighborhoods.
With no further business or comments, Ms. Penn adjourned the meeting at 1:17 p.m.
