HomeMy WebLinkAbout7/21/2009 - MinutesCommissioners Present: Ms. Martha Hooker Mr. Rodney McNeil Mr. David Radford Mr. Steve Azar Mr. Gary Jarrell Staff Present: Ms. Megan Cronise, Acting Secretary Mr. Joe Obenshain, Senior Assistant County Attorney Ms. Lindsay Blankenship Mr. Chris Patriarca Ms. Becky Mahoney Ms. Tara Pattisall Ms. Amanda Micklow CALL TO ORDER: Ms. Hooker called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. Approval of Agenda Mr. Radford made a motion to approve the agenda, which passed 5-0. Approval of Minutes Mr. Azar made a motion to approve the June 16, 2009, which passed 4-0-1, with Ms. Hooker abstaining. Mr. Azar made a motion to approve the July 10, 2009 minutes, which passed 5-0. Web 2.0 Tools Ms. Micklow discussed the interactive aspect of the web tools, including Facebook, Twitter, and Second Life. She provided an update on the planning department's newsletter, "Community Developments." She reviewed the contents of the newsletter, noting internet links will be available within the document. Mr. Azar inquired about maintenance. Ms. Micklow discussed this issue. She provided an explanation of the various applications. She stated Facebook would be used to provide updates including corridor plans and traffic information, Twitter would provide instant updates, and Second Life provides an interactive environment. Vinton Area Corridor Plan Ms. Blankenship provided an update on the plan, including the award of grants to the Town of Vinton. She discussed the importance of image building, gateway signage, and the development of commercial matching grants. Mr. Azar stated he would like to discuss preferences with Town of Vinton representatives. The commissioners and staff discussed various positive aspects of each proposed future land use scenario, including conservation areas, transitional designations, existing greenways, and floodplain areas. Other Comments Mr. McNeil made the motion to cancel the Planning Commission Work Session and Public Hearing for August 4, 2009, since no petitions are scheduled to be heard in August. The motion passed 5-0. Ms. Cronise invited the commissioners to a Wind Energy Webinar which will be held on August 7, 2009. Staff and commissioners discussed available dates for a Joint Town of Vinton/Roanoke County Planning Commission meeting.
